Dr. Hayley Castlehouse

Hayley has almost 20 years’ experience working as a science educator across a wide range of platforms, from school teacher to home tutor.

She is passionate about making science education accessible to all and bringing curiosity into the classroom to help students develop a deeper understanding of concepts and theories that will help them reach their academic potential.

She holds a BSc, MSc and PhD in Chemistry and Biology, and worked for 15 years as a science researcher in both Australia and the UK. Hayley gained her PGCE in secondary education in 2016 from Sheffield Hallam University and worked as a Science teacher, with a specialization in Chemistry education, for 4 years before moving into private tuition.

She now focuses primarily on online teaching, bringing science education to a wider audience.

Throughout my teaching career I have taught years 7 to 13.

I followed various KS3 courses such as Spotlight Science and Activate spending more or less equal amounts of time teaching Biology, Chemistry and Physics. At KS4 I followed AQA and OCR courses.

Majority of my time was spent on Physics but I did spend substantial amounts of time teaching Biology and Chemistry. At KS5 I taught Physics following the AQA and OCR courses and for a few years the Edexcel course.

I wrote many UCAS Physics references. For the majority of years I was a form tutor to all year groups at different times. When I was a Year 13 tutor I was involved in writing the Physics and form tutor references.

I have been teaching since 1984 when I completed a PGCE in Mathematics and Computing at Newcastle University.

I have a BSc in Physics from London University and an MSc in Mathematics from Teesside University.

In my career I have taught Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science to the age range from 11-18.

Mathematics is a high value course for qualification into a wide range of University courses and I am familiar about how the A-level course content links into undergraduate work.

For the bulk of my teaching experience I have also been a sixth form tutor. I have a lot of experience advising Y13 students and helping them with University entrance.

I have been an examiner for all the UK exam boards at various times. I am currently a Further Maths examiner for Pearson-Edexcel.

I have long experience of how examination mark schemes work and how candidates can use good exam technique to ensure they get the grade that reflects their ability.
